JAKARTA - Floods and severe landslides caused by heavy rains killed at least four people in Vietnam as of Saturday, July 18 local time.

AFP quoted a report by the Cong Ly government media saying that more than 238 hectares of rice fields and other crops in four mountainous provinces in northern Vietnam have been severely damaged since Wednesday this week.

The Vietnamese disaster and embankment authority added that many livestock or poultry died or were carried away by the flood.

Authorities have deployed 500 rescue workers to search for missing people and evacuate residents from areas at risk of landslides.

Natural disasters between January and June have killed at least 30 people in the country and caused losses of more than USD21.7 million.

The Southeast Asian country is prone to heavy rains between June and September, but scientists have identified human-caused climate change patterns that make extreme weather more frequent and damaging.
