Long-tailed Monkeys Become A New Problem In Gunugkidul Regency

JAKARTA - The Environment Agency (DLH) of Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region, is trying to restore the long-tailed monkey ecosystem so as not to disturb agricultural fields and enter community settlements.

Head of the DIY Environment Agency (DLH) Harry Sukmono in Gunungkidul said, in some of the kalinewon (sub-districts), long-tailed monkeys began to enter the village and fields owned by farmers.

"Taking advantage of the long-tailed monkey attack requires collaboration to restore the habitat ecosystem," said Harry, Sunday, June 2.

As is known, in Padukuhan Nongkosingit, Kalurahan Dadapayu, there was a conflict between humans and long-tailed monkeys (MEP) that disturbed residents.

The appearance of the MEP occurred in the morning at around 09.00 WIB to 10.00 WIB, and in the afternoon at around 15.00 WIB until 17.00 WIB.

During the rainy season, monkeys in the fields, while during the dry season, people enter their homes.

Harry said that the handling of the MEP must be done together and synergize to restore the habitat of the MEP ecosystem, among others by planting plant seeds that can produce MEP feed that cannot be consumed by humans.

"Furthermore, planting plants is to create a MEP habitat ecosystem so that it does not enter agricultural fields/plants and residential areas," he said.

Meanwhile, a resident of Nongkosingit Sigit Wahyu said that in the past week several monkeys had dropped to settlements.

He explained that every day he and other residents prepare catapults to get rid of monkeys. Local residents are worried about the appearance of this MEP because it enters the settlements, even entering the house.

"I had time to enter the house, but I haven't taken anything and I was immediately expelled. But if it was a woman who kicked him out, it would be like mocking," he said.

Sigit said monkeys usually take fruit around the yard such as bananas, papaya, to cassava. Since the last 5 years, monkeys have entered residential areas.

According to stories passed down from local residents, the MEP that entered the settlement was what their entourage or colony avoided.

"If you are shot, you don't dare, at least just get kicked out. You can even make rice fields people," he said.
