JAKARTA - New York Mayor Eric Adams said the New York Police Department (NYPD) arrested 300 pro-Palestinian demonstrators at Columbia University and City College of New York.
"About 300 people were arrested at Columbia and City College, we urge those arrests to distinguish students from those who shouldn't be there," Adams said in a press conference quoted by Sputnik-OANA via Antara, Wednesday, May 1.
He explained that the protest was triggered by a number of external actors and not students to create chaos.
On Tuesday, a Sputnik correspondent reported thatOOsher officers, wearing helmets and carrying batons and plastic handcuffs, installed iron barricades several blocks from Columbia University.
Students opposing Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip have barricaded themselves and prevented people from contacting their friends on campus.
Columbia University Chancellor MinOKe Shafik sent a letter to Deputy Commissioner for Legal Affairs Michael Gerber asking the police to stay on guard on campus, at least until May 17 to maintain order.
Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have appeared on US campuses in recent days to oppose the US military as well as financial and diplomatic support for Israeli military operations in Gaza.
The military operation has claimed the lives of more than 34,000 Palestinians and injured more than 7,000 others.
Students called on universities to condemn Israeli military operations in Gaza, divest in Israeli-linked companies, and stop study programs at Israeli universities, as well as other demands.
