JAKARTA - The National SAR Agency (Basarnas) continues to update the search equipment for missing victims, one of which is the Remote Operation Vehicle (ROV) which is capable of reaching a depth of up to 1,000 meters below sea level.

"So far, we have a ROV which only has a maximum capacity of 500 meters at the depths. However, this year Basarnas will use a ROV with a range of 1,000 meters," said Head of Basarnas Marshal Madya TNI Kusworo in Padang, West Sumatra (West Sumatra), reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, April 30.

TNI Intermediate Marshal Kusworo said the implementation of the renewal of the search tool was a Basarnas program which was expected to be realized in 2024. Currently, the implementation of the program has ranged from 30 to 40 percent.

The head of Basarnas said that the renewal of these tools is a must in anticipating or reducing the number of fatalities, especially due to airplane accidents.

The renewal of search equipment such as ROV cannot be separated from Basarnas' evaluation of several aircraft accidents that occurred in the country.

"From that evaluation, we ultimately demand to update tools, for example ROV," said Kusworo.

During his working visit to Ranah Minang, the Head of Basarnas also mentioned the opportunity for Basarnas to open a SAR post around Minangkabau International Airport.

Especially as an area that is included in the Pacific ring (ring of fire) zone, West Sumatra Province is prone to natural disasters. In other words, the placement of SAR around national vital objects is needed.

Kusworo gave an example of the floods and landslides that occurred in Pesisir Selatan Regency on March 7-8, 2024, as evidence that disaster management must involve many parties, including the use of qualified tools.
