JAKARTA - The United Nations calls for an "independent, effective and transparent investigation" regarding the discovery of a mass grave of two hospital complexes in Gaza, Palestine under siege and raided by Israeli forces.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said he was "horrified" by the views reported at the Nasser Hospital complex and Al-Shifa Hospital.

"Given the existing climate impunity, this should involve international investigators," Turk said on Tuesday, launching CNN April 24.

"Hospitals are entitled to very special protection based on international humanitarian law. And, intentional killings of civilians, detainees and others who are in a hors de Combat condition are war crimes," Turk explained.

A mass grave with so far 324 bodies was found this week at the Nasser Hospital Complex, Khan Younis City in southern Gaza by Gaza Civil Defense workers, following the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the area.

Earlier, health workers excavated bodies from mass graves in Al-Shifa, after they said Israeli forces killed hundreds of Palestinians and let their bodies rot for two weeks of a complex siege in northern Gaza.

At least 381 bodies were found in Al-Shifa after Israeli forces withdrew troops on April 1, according to Gaza's Civil Defense.
