TULUNGAGUNG - RSUD dr. Iskak Tulungagung, East Java, formed a team of conjoined twins involving many specialist doctors from cross-disciplinary sciences to treat conjoined butt twin babies (pygopagus) who are now being treated in a semi-sirilized isolation room, Mawar installation.
Acting Director of RSUD dr. Iskak Tulungagung dr. Kasil Rakhmat said that although the operation of separation would later be carried out by the conjoined twins at RSUP dr. Soetomo Surabaya, this is an opportunity for the regional hospital medical team belonging to the Tulungagung Regency Government to learn how to handle cases of conjoined twins to the operational and postoperative stages.
"Most likely (separation operation) will be carried out at dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya. But with our (medical) team as well, because this is also a learning material," said dr. Kasil when asked by the media crew regarding further steps after receiving referrals for conjoined twins arriving at the buttocks of Bhayangkara Hospital in Tulungagung, Antara, Tuesday, April 23.
The option for further medical steps was taken with the consideration that the RDUD medical team, dr. Iskak has not professionally handled similar cases ( conjoined twins operations).
Unlike RSUP dr. Soetomo Surabaya, who already has a conjoined twin team and has handled similar cases several times, even with more specific and complicated cassistics.
"We will not carry out segregation operations because professionally the cases are rare, our team has never carried out similar operations so we don't dare. Our medical team has no experience in handling cases of conjoined twins," said dr. Kasil.
In addition to being involved during the separation operation, the cross-disciplinary conjoined twin team formed by RSUD dr. Iskak will work extra to ensure the condition and development of the baby remains good until the age of 8-12 months, where the two toddlers will be subjected to separation surgery.
The first step that will now be taken is to carry out a detailed examination, especially related to the organs that are still one, or sticky or that have not yet formed anything.
"This will be information for further handling and later during the separation operation. With all the resources we have, with the supporting tools we have, with technology from professionals we have God willing, we can identify or assess this baby," he said.
Kasil said that his party had not been able to predict the details of the implementation of the operation that would be carried out, because theoretically the operation would be carried out in stages.
This is because there are only one organ in which there is only one, so during the operation of separation, it is necessary to add an organ or engineered artificial organ to one of the conjoined twins who grazed the buttocks.
"For the determination of the baby receiving the organs, it will be discussed with the family and the medical ethics committee. Of course this is also a medical consideration, whose organs are more inclined," he said.
RSUD dr. Iskak Tulungagung Regency received a referral for handling conjoined twins. The baby who was born on April 17, 2024, was attached to the buttocks and anus.
According to the health literature, cases of the birth of conjoined twins are classified as very rare events, because on average there is only one case of 250 thousand births living around the world.
