Fruit Traders At Kramat Jati Main Market Dispose Of Tens Of Tons Of Papaya Because Prices Drop

JAKARTA - A number of fruit traders at the Kramat Jati Main Market threw away papaya because they were disappointed with the price that kept falling. Tens of tons of papaya fruit were thrown away as a form of traders' disappointment over the instability of papaya fruit prices in traditional markets.

"The papaya didn't sell well, the price has been much lower, but still the papaya didn't sell. So it was thrown away a lot, instead it fell by almost 60 percent," said Inas, a papaya fruit trader to reporters, Tuesday, April 23.

The price of papaya fruit dropped drastically to 60 percent. From the price of Rp. 80,000 to Rp. 30 thousand. In addition to the cheap selling price, buyers' interest has also decreased since before Eid Al-Fitr 2024.

"Sudah harga turun, yang belanja juga tidak ada. Ini sudah dua minggu. (jualan) Tidak ada keuntungan juga, untung-untung ya paling balik modal saja," ujarnya.

Traders hope that the price of papaya fruit can return to normal and stable. Currently, traders can only surrender to the existing conditions.
