MOSCOW - Head of Civil Protection Thomas Djimasse said at least 58 people died after their ship capsized on the Mpoko River near Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic (CAR).

According to Djimasse, the ship measuring 20 meters long and three meters wide carried more than 300 people who were about to go to the funeral of a village head.

Overloading is likely to be the cause of the accident.

"We have evacuated 58 bodies. We do not yet know how many victims are still in the river," said Djimasse, quoted from ANTARA, Sunday, April 21.

Until now, the search operation is still ongoing.
