Russia Values ​​NATO Returning to Cold War Mindset as Defense Alliance Turns 75 Years This Week

JAKARTA - Russian authorities said on Wednesday the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was returning to a Cold War mindset, as the alliance celebrated its 75th anniversary this week.

"Today, in relations with Russia, the bloc has returned to a Cold War situation," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters, as reported by Reuters, April 4.

Zakharova further said that NATO has no place in the "multipolar world" that Moscow says it wants to build to end US domination, but this remains the focus of Russia's attention.

It is known that President Vladimir Putin launched what he called a "special military operation" in Ukraine in 2022, aimed at preventing NATO from expanding its reach near Russia.

However, the war had strengthened the alliance, which had grown to 32 members by admitting Finland and Sweden.

Meanwhile, NATO foreign ministers met in Brussels, Belgium on Wednesday to discuss proposals that would give the alliance a more direct role in coordinating the supply of weapons, ammunition, and equipment to Ukraine.

Western governments say they are helping Ukraine fight for survival in the face of a Russian invasion.

Zakharova added that NATO's history was "full of aggressive adventures that brought war and destruction to many countries", and its anniversary was no reason to celebrate.
