"We and the volunteers of the Wijaya Peduli Bangsa Foundation want to share our love for the local community living around Bantar Gebang. Most of them work as scavengers of garbage to earn sustenance to meet their daily needs," said Eddy Wijaya as Chairman of the Wijaya Peduli Bangsa Foundation.
According to the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, the volume of waste in the Bantar Gebang TPST 2021-2023 reaches an average of 7,200 tons per day. Eddy Wijaya also had time to ask how much residents earn after collecting plastic waste for one week. "Gathered for one week can get plastic waste up to 500 kg per person, and if husband and wife can get 1 ton and sell it at a price of Rp. 400,- per kg," explained a resident.
Even though it is surrounded by mountains of garbage, there are reading houses that are useful for educating children in Bantar Gebang. "For PAUD (Education for Early Childhoods) approximately 60 children," said one resident.
Eddy Wijaya felt touched when he heard the stories of local residents who took damaged fruits and the food left from the pile of garbage for consumption. There are also those who earn food left in the form of chicken meat which is only in the form of bones wrapped on the rest of the meat that is still attached, even though it is damaged, they wash and goreng to eat. "Usually the condition is damaged?" asked Eddy. "It's broken, later washed, cleaned and fried again," said one resident.
