The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the 6.1 magnitude (M) earthquake in the Savu Sea, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) had no potential for a tsunami.
"This earthquake has no potential for a tsunami, so people don't need to panic," said Head of Kupang Geophysics Station Margiono when contacted, Sunday, March 24, as quoted by Antara.
An M 6.1 earthquake in the Savu Sea or 128 km southeast of Ende, NTT occurred at 11.04.10 WITA, Sunday, March 24.
Margiono explained that the earthquake that occurred was a shallow type of earthquake due to active sea floor fault activity.
The results of the analysis of the source mechanism also show that the earthquake has an upward horizontal movement mechanism.
He said the tremors were felt in Ende, Larantuka, Waingapu, Bajawa, Maumere, Sabu, and even Bima in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).
However, he asked the public not to panic because the earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami.
"There has been no aftershock activity either," he said.
He invited the public not to be influenced by false issues related to earthquakes.
All official information, he said, only came from the BMKG.
"Stay calm, don't panic," said Margiono.
