Call Prabowo, Joe Biden Promises To Expand Cooperation With Indonesia

JAKARTA - United States President Joe Biden by telephone congratulated Prabowo Subianto, who became president-elect after his 2024 election victory.

Biden also hopes that bilateral relations will be stronger in the future under Indonesia's new leaders.

According to the release of the White House, Biden and Prabowo praised the good relations between Indonesia and the US that have existed for 75 years based on beliefs in the same values, namely democracy and pluralism.

"President Biden promised to expand cooperation with Indonesia under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of the US and Indonesia and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework," the White House statement said as quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, March 23.

President Biden also promised the elected president of the Republic of Indonesia to continue to strengthen cooperation with Indonesia in order to achieve a free, open, prosperous, and safe Indo-Pacific region.

Joe Biden previously also congratulated Prabowo in a letter dated March 12, 2024, when the Indonesian presidential candidate outperformed the 2024 Presidential Election (Pilpres) with his vice presidential candidate, Gibran Rakabuming Raka.

The candidate pair Prabowo-Gibran was recently declared president and vice president elected by the Indonesian KPU on March 20, 2024.

Biden conveyed congratulations to Prabowo through a letter submitted directly by the US Ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Yohannes Abraham during his visit to the Ministry of Defense office, Jakarta, Thursday (14/3).

In a letter with the Kop The White House referring to the White House or the US Presidential Palace, Joe Biden also congratulated the 2024 General Election which was successfully held properly.

"I congratulate the Indonesian people on the success of holding elections, which is a form of our joint commitment to democracy, and (congratulate also to, ed.) you are superior in the vote. I am waiting for the announcement of the official results," Biden said in his letter.

Biden is also optimistic that the world will be safer and the two countries will be stronger when Indonesia and the US continue to work together.

He closed the letter with the best hope for Prabowo. "Hopefully in the future, the people of our two countries will always live in peace, prosper, and progress," said Biden closing his letter to Prabowo.
