Myanmar Military Adds Charges, Aung San Suu Kyi Sentenced To 9 Years In Prison

JAKARTA - The Myanmar military regime continues to try to legalize the detention of Myanmar leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, who they have held since the coup on February 1 in the early hours of the morning.

Most recently, in the second trial that Suu Kyi held by videoconference, Monday March 1, the leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) Party added two charges, so that a total of I faced 4 charges.

The first new charge to be added is of violating Article 505b of the Criminal Code regarding issuing any statement, rumor or report that is likely to influence members of the public to commit an offense against the state, as reported by Myanmar Now.

The second is for alleged violations of Article 67 of the Telecommunications Law, due to owning or using limited communication devices that require a license.

Previously, Suu Kyi was accused of illegally importing walkie-talkies that violated the Export and Import Law, and violated the Natural Disaster Management Law for violating regulations aimed at curbing Covid-19 while campaigning in the November 2020 elections.

With the four charges that the military regime has brought against her, Suu Kyi will be charged with multiple sentences, the accumulation of every charge. In total, it is estimated that Aung San Suu Kyi will face 9 years in prison.

Regarding this, the lawyer prepared by the NLD said that Aung San Suu Kyi had her human rights violated, because she had not received a fair trial regarding lawyer assistance.

Apart from not being able to be accompanied by a lawyer in the trial, Suu Kyi has also not been able to meet with a lawyer, even though all permits have been taken care of since last February 16.
