KapuaS HULU - Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan appealed to the public to be aware of flood disasters considering that currently the Kapuas river water discharge is overflowing due to the high rainfall intensity.

"The water discharge of the Kapuas river is starting to overflow, so people need to be aware of flooding, especially in a number of residential areas in the lowlands," said Head of BPBD Kapuas Hulu Gunawan in Putussibau as reported by ANTARA, Monday, February 26.

Gunawan said the Kapuas river water discharge began to rise because the intensity of rainfall in the upstream area was quite high.

According to him, several flood-prone areas are in South Putussibau District such as Barak Bay, Kedamin Hilir Village, Tanjung Jati Village, and North Putussibau District, namely in the Dodogom area, Hilir Village, Office and its surroundings.

As for the downstream coastal areas of the Kapuas river, such as Bika, Embaloh Hilir, Bunut Hilir and lake areas.

"The rain in the last few days has been quite heavy and evenly causing the river to overflow, hopefully it will not be a big flood, but we remind residents to always be aware of natural disasters," he said.

He asked the sub-district heads, village heads and village heads to continue to monitor the development of flood disasters in their respective areas.

"If there are developments, the water will still rise, immediately report to BPBD so that we know as a consideration to take steps to deal with the flood disaster," he said.

According to field observations, the Kapuas river began to overflow on Monday morning (26/2) at around 08.00 WIB, at 14.50 WIB the water began to inundate road access in Barak Bay, Kedamin Hilir Village, South Putussibau District.

A number of residents have started to evacuate vehicles, both two-wheeled and four-wheeled, to quite high areas.

One of the residents of Barak Wahyuni Bay said the overflow of the Kapuas river was quite fast inundating the yard, it was feared that a large flood would occur.

"Hopefully it's just a flood, because if it's flooded it's hard to move and you have to use a boat because the roads are also submerged," he said.
