JAKARTA - Secretary General of the PDI-P (PDIP), Hasto Kristiyanto, said there were other reasons for the postponement of the number three vice presidential candidate (cawapres), Mahfud MD from the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs.

One of them is regarding the handling of legal issues of Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights (Wamenkumham) Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej or Eddy Hiariej.

"Of course there is another background, namely related to legal issues," said Hasto to reporters at the PDIP DPP Office, Jakarta, Monday, February 5.

According to him, while still serving as Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mahfud had highlighted the alleged bribery and gratification case. In fact, it is considered that there are many legal facts that show that Eddy Hiariej has violated the crime.

However, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) which handled the case never made arrests even though the former Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights had the status of a suspect.

"Prof Mahfud sees when with the facts that he thinks meets the faiths, material evidence on the problems of the former Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights, Prof. Eddy," he said.

This, continued Hasto, was due to intervention from the authorities. It is suspected that Eddy was involved in lobbying the Constitutional Court (MK) decision scandal regarding the age limit for presidential candidates (candidates) and vice presidential candidates (cawapres).

Where, in the decision, President Joko Widodo's eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka passed as a vice presidential candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election (Pilpres) contestation.

"It turned out that then an intervention emerged and it was suspected that it was also related to the lobbying that took place at the Constitutional Court," said Hasto.

Hasto also emphasized that Mahfud's resignation from the seat of Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs was not related to efforts to boost electoral votes. For example, to maintain ethics and not get involved in conflicts of interest.

"The decision of Prof. Mahfud MD is not based on electoral calculations, but as a very fundamental principle of principle in politics to provide negligence, not to mix between power and electoral," said Hasto.
