East Flores Resort Police, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province has imposed an open and close system on the Trans Flores road that connects Maumere of Sikka Regency with East Flores Larantuka due to the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki, who is now on alert status.

"Yes, it is true that since yesterday the open and close system has been implemented due to the eruption of Mount Lewotobi for the safety of motorists," said East Flores Police Chief AKBP I Nyoman Putra Sandita from Larantuka, East Flores, quoted by ANTARA Thursday, January 11.

This was conveyed in connection with any efforts from the local police to ensure that there were no casualties as long as the eruption of Mount Lewotobi was still ongoing.

He said his party had prepared alternative routes for motorists, both four and two wheels, if conditions were not possible.

Nyoman Putra also explained that the Trans Flores road opening and closing system was also carried out in accordance with recommendations from the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG) related to the eruption.

Based on the recommendations after experiencing an increase in status from alert to alert, there should be no activity within a radius of four kilometers from the eruption center.

Meanwhile, the Trans Flores road connecting Maumere and Larantuka must pass through the red zone which is within a radius four kilometers from Mount Lewotobi.

"Dulipali Village in Ile Bura District, which is the Trans Flores route, is a red zone route, so that the open and close system is enforced," he said.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) on Wednesday (10/1) yesterday urged residents to leave or vacate Dulipali Village in Ile Bura District, East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) after the status of Mount Lewotobi Male from level III or Alert to level IV or Alert to Alert.

"For now, one sectoral northwestern village must be vacated. From the KRB map, it is Dulipali Village," said Head of the Lewotobi Male Volcano Observation Post, Herman Yosep.

PVMBG stated that the increase in mountain status since Tuesday at 23.00 WITA. Visually during January 1-9, 2024, there was volcanic activity of Mount Lewotobi Laki which showed an increase in the maximum eruption column height of 1,500 meters from the eruption center located in the northwest-northwest area of the crater.

In addition, incandescent beams and ejections of incandescent material were observed at the peak and lava flow in the fracture section in the northwest-north direction from the summit.
