The Tepuai River and Embau River in Kapuas Hulu Regency, West Kalimantan overflowed due to high-intensity rain on Friday (5/1) in the early hours of the morning.

Plt. Head of BNPB Disaster Data and Communication Center Abdul Muhari said that the river overflow caused flooding which affected 500 families/900 residents living in Nanga Tepuai Village, Hulu Gunung District.

"It is reported that the flood has also submerged several infrastructures such as 350 housing units, Hulu Gurung Sub-district Office, BKKBN Office, three educational facilities, and one posyandu unit," said Abdul Muhari in his statement, Friday, January 5.

Abdul Muhari said the Kapuas Hulu Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) had gone to the scene to collect data and coordinate with related parties to carry out further handling.

"Until now, BPBD is still on standby at the affected locations, considering that the conditions at the location are still raining," he said.

Meanwhile, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning that the potential for rain accompanied by lightning or lightning and strong winds of short duration could potentially occur in most parts of West Kalimantan on Saturday, January 6 and Sunday, January 7.

"Seeing the potential for rain that will still occur, BNPB appealed to the community and local governments to increase preparedness by cleaning rivers from mud and garbage materials, routinely monitoring river discharge during rain and forming a village-level disaster preparedness team as the first team to respond to an emergency in the event of a flood," he added.
