5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Kupang NTT

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 rocked the Kupang area, East Nusa Tenggara on Thursday, December 28 at around 01.52 WIB.

According to information received, the epicenter of the earthquake was on land, about 15 km southwest of Kupang Regency, with a depth of 32 km at coordinates 10.08 south latitude and 123.78 east longitude.

Earthquake shocks were felt quite significantly in Kupang City, with a scale of III Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI). This scale indicates that earthquake vibrations felt real in the house, and some even reported that the vibration seemed like a large truck was passing by.

BMKG also appealed to residents to remain alert to possible aftershocks that may occur.

Although major earthquakes have occurred, they are often followed by aftershocks that can cause additional damage.

Local authorities are advised to carry out safety procedures and ensure that the public is properly informed of the steps needed to be taken in dealing with emergency situations.
