DENPASAR - A total of 331 inmates in Bali Province received a proposal from the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) Bali to receive a special remission for Christmas 2023.

"A total of 331 prisoners came from six prisons, four state detention houses and one child development institution," said Head of the Bali Ministry of Law and Human Rights Regional Office Romi Yudianto in Denpasar, Saturday.

He explained that the remission given was two types, namely special remission (RK) I or commonly known as reducing the usual sentence and RK II which were immediately released after deducting the remaining period of detention.

For the Christmas 2023 period, he continued, his party proposed 327 prisoners who received RK I, and the plan was for four prisoners to be released immediately.

He explained that special remissions for Christmas are the rights of correctional inmates given by the state to those who have met the requirements or behaved well.

Romi said that remission was given to prisoners who had met the criteria and conditions in accordance with Law Number 22 of 2022 concerning Corrections.

"Currently, the verification and validation process is being carried out at the Directorate General of Corrections. So that the proposed number may increase or decrease. If during the verification process a incomplete requirement is found, it will be reviewed," he added.

The granting of special remissions for religious holidays is also expected to reduce the excess capacity that occurs in a number of correctional institutions and state detention centers in Bali.

Reported by ANTARA, Saturday, December 23, based on data from the Correctional Database System (SDP) of the Directorate General of Corrections through the sdppublik.ditjenpas.go.id page which was accessed on Saturday (23/12) which was updated at 18.30 WITA, the total number of prisoners and inmates in Bali reached 4,042 people.

That number has exceeded the total capacity of 1,544 people.

Of the 10 prisons, detention centers and coaching institutions in Bali, Class II-A Kerobokan prisons in Badung Regency are the most populous prisons inhabited by 1,221 inmates from their supposed capacity of 466 people.

Apart from Kerobokan, the Class II-A Narcotics Prison in Bangli Regency also exceeds the capacity of 1,137 inmates and the capacity should reach 468 people.
