JAKARTA - The European Union is ready to contribute to the US-led maritime coalition for the security of the Red Sea after the Houthis attacked commercial ships at sea.

At the extraordinary meeting of the Political and Security Committee (PSC), EU member states agreed to contribute to the US-led Prosperity Guard Operation, EU Head of Foreign Policy Josep Borrell said via X on Thursday.

Borrell called Houthi's irresponsible actions a threat to freedom of sailing in the Red Sea.

The European Union will intensify the exchange of information, and increase its "presence with additional naval assets," he explained as quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Thursday, December 21.

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias announced Greece would send a frigate to participate in the US-led operation in the Red Sea, the ERT television station said.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin earlier this week announced the creation of a multinational naval task force to ward off Houthis attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea.

According to the US, so far NATO member countries such as the UK, Canada, France, Italy, Norway and the Netherlands have promised support for Prosperous Guard Operations to protect trade vessels transiting between Asia and Europe.

Iran-backed Yemen's Houthi militia continues to intensify its involvement in the Gaza conflict by attacking ships in the south of the Red Sea.

The Houthis argued that the action was carried out in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle in the Gaza Strip.

The Red Sea is one of the most frequently used sea routes in the world for oil and fuel shipments.
