JAKARTA - The Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemenkominfo) said that the Circular (SE) of artificial intelligence (AI), which is currently entering the finalization stage, is designed as an ethical guide for industry players who use AI.
"This SE is an ethical guide. We hope that it will be a reference for value in producing AI products for business and industrial actors who implement or use AI," said Deputy Minister of Communication and Information (Wamenkominfo) Nezar Patria in Jakarta, Antara, Wednesday, December 13.
Furthermore, Nezar said the SE AI was the beginning for a regulatory foothold for Indonesia in terms of preparing a better AI development ecosystem.
He said that at the international level, regulations related to AI had begun to be released by developed countries such as the European Union with the EU AI Act.
According to him, this will certainly trigger other countries in the world to also be able to present similar regulations considering that AI has grown very rapidly in recent times.
"What the European Union has done will certainly spur the presence of other regulations in the world. Indonesia, in this case, will start with ethical guidelines first," said Nezar.
Nezar then confirmed that the presence of SE AI in Indonesia would not curb the presence of innovation and would minimize the negative impact of implementing AI technology in the industry. He then said that this SE will be released in the near future, namely the third week of December 2023.
Previously, on Tuesday (5/12), Deputy Minister of Communication and Information Nezar Patria also revealed the reason why Indonesia preferred to discipline circulars, instead of issuing stricter rules.
This is because Indonesia is currently still at the stage of exploration and innovation in the use of artificial intelligence.
Therefore, the current implementation of AI is more directed at supervision and governance which can help reduce risks that may arise.
For more binding rules, he said, currently Indonesia already has the Law on Information and Electronic Transactions and the Personal Data Protection Act.
