Today BPPTKG Notes Mount Merapi Has Launched Hot Clouds 7 Times Towards Kali Krasak

JAKARTA - The Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) reported that Mount Merapi on the border of Central Java Province-Yogyakarta Special Region has launched hot clouds of avalanches with a maximum sliding distance of 3.5 kilometers. BPPTKG noted that seven times Mount Merapi launched hot clouds and headed for Kali Krasak. According to a BPPTKG report, Mount Merapi launched hot clouds of avalanches for 360 seconds at 14:49 WIB, then launched hot clouds for 120 seconds each at 14:56 WIB and at 14:59 WIB. The volcano then launched hot clouds of avalanches for 137 seconds each at 15.06 WIB and at 15.09 WIB, then launched hot clouds again at 15.32 WIB for 106 seconds and at 15.32 WIB for 123 seconds. "The public is advised to stay away from the recommended hazard areas," said Head of BPPTKG Agus Budi Santoso in his report quoted by Antara. According to a BPPTKG report, Mount Merapi during the observation period Friday from 12.00 to 18.00 WIB also experienced eight avalanche hot cloud earthquakes, 27 avalanches, seven multiple phase earthquakes, and four shallow volcanic earthquakes. Agus conveyed the potential danger in the form of lava avalanches and hot clouds from Mount Merapi in the south-southwest sector which includes the Boyong River (a maximum of five kilometers) and the Bedog, Krasak, and Bebeng rivers (a maximum of seven kilometers). The potential danger in the form of lava avalanches and hot clouds of Mount Merapi also includes the southeast sector which includes the Woro River (a maximum of three kilometers) and the Gendol River (a maximum of five kilometers).

According to BPPTKG, if an explosive eruption occurs, the ejection of volcanic material from Mount Merapi can reach an area within a radius of three kilometers from the top of the mountain. BPPTKG urges residents to be aware of disturbances caused by the volcanic ash of Mount Merapi and the dangers of lahars in the area around the volcano when it rains.
