Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud Md asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) Retno Marsudi to coordinate with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) regarding the fate of Rohingya refugees.

"The Minister of Foreign Affairs will contact UNHCR in the not too distant future," he said when met after holding a meeting to discuss Rohingya refugees at the office of the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Jakarta, reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, December 6.

According to Mahfud, Indonesia did not sign the United Nations (UNHCR) convention on Refugees so it was not tied to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Therefore, assistance to Rohingya immigrants was carried out by Indonesia on humanitarian grounds.

With the coordination carried out by Retno, Mahfud hopes that UNHCR can move quickly in dealing with Rohingya refugees who are starting to explode.

At the same time, Foreign Minister Retno was seen attending a meeting held today. When asked about the discussion of the meeting, Retno was reluctant to comment.

"Just to the Coordinating Minister (Mahfud MD)," he said briefly.

Previously, President Joko Widodo ordered Mahfud Md to deal with the problem of Rohingya refugees entering Indonesian territory, involving local governments and UNHCR.

Meanwhile, the Aceh Provincial Government has also coordinated with UNHCR regarding the handling of Rohingya immigrants who landed on Weh Island, Sabang City.

The Aceh Provincial Government together with the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs and the Ministry of Law and Human Rights also coordinated to find solutions for handling Rohingya immigrants who were accommodated in several places in Aceh.
