Deputy Minister of Communication and Information, Nezar Patria, reminded the public of the dangers of artificial intelligence technology, in this case deepfakes that have the potential to spread information chaos. "The emergence of deepfakes with the use of AI generatives, I think, has contributed greatly to information disorder or information chaos," said Nezar in Jakarta, Antara, Tuesday, December 5. Nezar said the development of deepfake technology which is increasingly sophisticated today is able to manipulate information and create content that is difficult to distinguish between right and fake. AI's generative ability, he said, especially in multi-model language models, allows data manipulation and information with a dangerous level of sophistication. He said deepfakes can create content that mimics images to sound into something new. This technology is considered a serious threat to information order and is often used in a political context. He gave an example of a viral video some time ago showing that President Joko Widodo was manipulated and could make a smooth speech using Mandarin. "For example, the President can speak Mandarin very smoothly, then the next day he will appear again in Arabic smoothly. That's one way that deepfakes try to manipulate," said Nezar. "So it's getting more and more sophisticated. In the midst of threatening him, I think this AI generative can destroy the flow of information we receive," he continued. However, Nezar stressed that AI's generative technology also provides great benefits in various sectors, such as the health and transportation sectors. Seeing the complexity of positive and negative impacts of AI, Nezar said that the government would soon issue a Circular Letter of the Minister of Communication and Information Technology for the Ethical Guide to Artificial Intelligence.
This circular is expected to guide the governance of AI use in the community ethically and transparently. "So, business actors are also there, ordinary people, from design, development, to use, can refer to this artificial intelligence ethics circular," he said.
