UN Regrets War In Gaza Continues After Ceasefire Ends

JAKARTA - The resumption of the war in Gaza after the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel ended on Friday morning regretted by United Nations officials, saying it was a disaster.

Israel launched an attack on the Gaza region on Friday after it dropped a rocket that it claimed was fired from the direction of the region, an hour before the ceasefire ended at local time, after no agreement was reached to extend it.

In this regard, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep regret over the resumption of fighting between Israel and Hamas.

"I deeply regret that military operations are starting again in Gaza. I still hope that the existing pauses can be updated. The return to hostilities only shows how important a true humanitarian ceasefire is," Guterres said in a post on X on Friday, according to CNN December 1.

Meanwhile, the UN Human Rights Chief said the resumption of fighting in Gaza was a "big disaster".

The situation in Gaza is "outside the point of crisis" and the resumption of fighting is a "big disaster," said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker T\"urk.

"I urge all parties and countries that have an influence on them to immediately redouble efforts to ensure a ceasefire, on humanitarian grounds and human rights," T\", T\"urk urged.

T\"urk further said recent comments from Israeli leaders indicating their plans to expand and intensify military attacks were "disturbing."

"Since October 7, thousands of Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza. More are now facing the same fate. Others are at risk of being forcibly transferred to the Gaza region which is already very congested and unhealthy," he added.

The UN representative called for the release of all remaining hostages, indiscriminately stopping rocket fire, and concrete measures to prevent further disasters.
