JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Nurul Ghufron said Nawawi Pomolango was right to become Acting Chairman of the KPK replacing Firli Bahuri. This is because the figure is the most senior among other deputy chairmen of the anti-corruption commission and has no problems.

It is known that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) issued a Presidential Decree (Keppres) to temporarily dismiss Firli Bahuri as Chairman of the KPK and appoint Nawawi as Acting Chairman of the KPK.

The dismissal was carried out after he became a suspect in the alleged extortion and acceptance of gratuities from former Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Syahrul Yasin Limpo.

"It feels like Pak Nawawi is the right person because the most senior one of us is the existing leader, so he hopes to have more policies, and he is accepted or does not have resistance from KPK personnel," said Ghufron in a written statement to reporters quoted Monday, November 27.

Ghufron stated that he would fully support Nawawi as Firli's replacement. Moreover, the Presidential Decree on the appointment has been received by the KPK.

He hopes that in the future Nawawi can work optimally to restore the anti-corruption commission which was tarnished by the allegations that ensnared Firli. "For us, this is the time for us to open ourselves up to improve all internal and external good things," said Ghufron.

"We believe Pak Nawawi is able to return to join forces with all elements of the anti-corruption fighter nation," he continued.

As previously reported, President Jokowi has signed Presidential Decree for the dismissal of Firli and the appointment of Nawawi as Acting Chairman of the KPK. The signing was carried out upon arrival from a working visit to West Kalimantan on Thursday night, November 24.

Meanwhile, Vice President Ma'ruf Amin hopes that Nawawi will be able to restore the good name of the anti-corruption commission after Firli was disabled because he was named a suspect by the Polda Metro Jaya.

"We hope that this replacement (Firli Bahuri) will work better. So that law enforcement can be further improved," said Ma'ruf on the sidelines of activities in Bratislava, Slovakia, Saturday local time, November 25.

"Don't let our law enforcement agencies lower their credibility so that they need to be addressed," he concluded.
