JAKARTA - Beijing's senior diplomat on Tuesday said China was ready to play a constructive role in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit (APEC) in San Francisco, United States on November 15-17.

"As the largest developing country in the world and an important member of APEC, China is willing to meet the expectations of the international community and play a constructive role in APEC's success this year," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said.

Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping did not attend the G-20 summit in New Delhi India this month, with Prime Minister Li Qiang replacing him.

"Of course, we and all parties hope that the United States recognizes its responsibility as host, shows openness, justice, inclusiveness, and responsibility, as well as creates better conditions for the smooth running of the meeting," Foreign Minister Wang said, when asked if President Xi would attend the APEC summit this year.

"China is communicating with related parties, and will make an announcement in due course," Foreign Minister Wang added.

The dialogue between China and the United States continues in stages, despite tensions between the two superpowers, especially regarding Taiwan.

Meanwhile, hopes for President Xi to meet President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the APEC Summit increased, after the two did not meet at India's G20 Summit.

At the same press conference, Foreign Minister Wang said, without mentioning the names of any country, China is against the expansion of a "surprising" military alliance that suppresses the security space of other countries.

Beijing has criticized Washington's ongoing efforts to deepen military alliances in the Asia-Pacific region. Beijing in particular does not approve of a base built by the US military in the north of the Philippines and near democratically-ruled Taiwan, which China claims to be part of its territory.
