Protecting Shipping Activities, 62 Countries Support the Formation of Indonesian Maritime Navigation Maps

MATARAM - A total of 62 countries who are members of the Electronic Navigational Chart Working Group (ENCWG) support the formation of standard Indonesian marine navigation charts.

Commander of the Indonesian Navy's Hydro-Oceanographic Center (Danpushidrosal), Vice Admiral National Military (TNI) Nurhidayat, said that the formation of standard marine navigation maps aims to provide protection in shipping activities.

"Implementation will begin in 2024. Later, this navigation system can be used via smartphones," said Nurhidayat in West Lombok, Monday 25 September, reported by Antara.

He said that Indonesia's electronic navigation chart (NEC) system currently still applies old navigation standards.

With the new standard, it will make it easier for countries that use ENC to monitor the situation and conditions of the oceans in Indonesia, especially in the southern waters, such as Bali, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

"So, this meeting is to form navigation standards that will be inseparable from other countries," he said.

In establishing the new navigation system, he said, delegations from ENCWG members have provided input and various considerations, both in the application of the methodological system, ocean currents, tides and a description of what conditions are like on the Indonesian seabed.

"Through this new navigation system, movements under the sea can also be monitored. This can also be supporting data for BMKG and the National Research Agency," he said.

At the event which took place in Senggigi, West Lombok Regency, delegates from 62 countries that were members of the ENCWG were present, including France, Australia, the United States, New Zealand, Sweden, Finland, Canada, Denmark, India, the Netherlands, Korea and the United Kingdom as well as from Indonesia with representatives from Danpushidrosal Vice Admiral TNI Nurhidayat.
