BMKG Calls The M 5.0 Earthquake In The Banda Sea Due To Lempeng Rock Deformation

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded an earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 5.0 in the South Coast of Gorom Island due to rock deformation on the Banda plate which was subducted.

The results of the BMKG analysis showed that the epicenter of the earthquake that occurred on Tuesday, September 5 that afternoon was located at coordinates 4.51 deg LS; 131.14 deg BT, precisely located in the sea at a distance of 176 km southeast of Gorom Island, Eastern Seram, Maluku at a depth of 59 km.

"By taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow type of earthquake due to rock deformation on the Banda plate which was subducted. The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has a horizontal movement mechanism (strike-slip)," said the Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono in his statement, Tuesday, September 5, confiscated by Antara.

Based on the estimation of the shock map (shakemap), this earthquake caused shocks on Gorom Island, East Seram Wakate with an intensity scale of III MMI (vibrationality felt real in the house, vibration felt as if a truck had passed), Panjang Island, East Seram with intensity scale II - III MMI (vibrational vibration felt real in the house, felt as if a truck had passed).

"As of 11.50 WIB, the results of BMKG monitoring have not shown any aftershock activity," he said.
