Jokowi And Vietnamese PM Discuss Cooperation On Electric Vehicle Development

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Vietnam Prime Minister (PM) Pham Minh Chinh at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, discussed cooperation in developing the private sector electric vehicle ecosystem.

"The two leaders welcomed the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem by the private sector and encouraged cooperation between BUMN and the two countries," said Foreign Minister (Menlu) Retno Marsudi who accompanied President Jokowi in a meeting with Vietnamese PM Pham Minh Chinh, as stated by the Press, Media, and Information Bureau of the Presidential Secretariat reported by ANTARA, Monday, September 4.

In addition to electric vehicles, the two leaders also encouraged the realization of cooperation in the maritime and fisheries sectors

"With Vietnam, the Vietnamese PM invited the President to Vietnam. He both encouraged the realization of sustainable maritime and fisheries cooperation," said Retno.

As the foundation of the cooperation in the fisheries sector, said Retno, President Jokowi encouraged the two countries to immediately sign a memorandum of understanding related to the fisheries sector.

"Mr. President encourages the fisheries MoU to be signed immediately. This is the foundation for sustainable fisheries management cooperation," he said.

The bilateral meeting between Jokowi and Pham Minh Chinh was held ahead of the ASEAN Summit (KTT), from 5 to 7 September 2023 in Jakarta.

Vietnam and Indonesia are a number of ASEAN countries that have a production base for electric vehicles.

As decided by ASEAN leaders at the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) in 2023, Southeast Asian block countries initiated the formation of an electric vehicle ecosystem in the region which is expected to be an important part of the world supply chain.

Also accompanying the President in a meeting with Vietnamese PM, namely Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud Md., Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi, Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo, and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung.
