JAKARTA - Two people died on Wednesday, as Russia launched its biggest airstrike since spring on Kyiv, with missile debris falling into buildings, parks and schools, Ukrainian officials said.

Russian airstrikes began with a group of drones heading for Kyiv from various directions, followed by a missile salvo launched by the Tupolev Tu-95 strategic bomber.

It is not clear what was hit by the drone that was not shot down.

"Kyiv has not experienced this strong attack since spring. The enemy launched a massive joint attack using drones and missiles," said Serhiy Popko, head of city military administration through a Telegram messaging application.

"Overall, air defense forces destroyed more than 20 enemy targets," he continued.

Meanwhile, the bodies of two people were found in a non-residential building, said Mayor Vitali Klitschko on the Telegram channel.

At around 04.00 a.m., chunks of burning missile debris flew across the night sky on the southwestern outskirts of Kyiv and landed nearby, a Reuters witness said.

Several buildings were damaged by debris, while officials in the Kyiv region said six private houses were damaged by missile fragments and several people were injured.

"Humans don't do things like that. There is no military object here, nothing nothing but an apartment block. The missiles fell in the park," said Roman Feshchenko, 76, whose residential area fell into missile debris.

Separately, Ukraine's air defenses shot down 28 incoming missiles and 15 of the 16 drones in a overnight attack, which also targeted the Odesa region in the Black Sea, said General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, Commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The Russian side did not immediately comment on last night's airstrikes, but Moscow said it managed to thwart Ukraine's drone strike in western Russia.
