Former KPU Chairman Arif Budiman Surprised That The Legislative Can't Report Wealth Before Voting

JAKARTA - Former Chairman of the General Elections Commission (KPU) Arif Budiman highlighted that the new rules for legislative candidates (caleg) do not need to report their wealth at the beginning. In fact, in his leadership era, this obligation must be carried out.

He initially explained that the obligation to submit the State Administrators Wealth Report (LHKPN) was implemented after the KPU communicated with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). They received input from many general election participants who were not orderly in reporting.

"At that time, there was a report showing that the LHKPN report had never reached 100 percent for all public officials elected through elections," Arif said as quoted from an online discussion broadcast on YouTube, Wednesday, August 30.

"So members of the district/city DPRD, provinces, DPR RI, DPD, regional heads have never reported 100 percent," he continued.

This reason made the KPU decide that prospective election participants must report their wealth. "If you don't choose, we will not continue to be inaugurated. So wait for the LHKPN to be fulfilled," said Arif.

This method is then considered to make officials elected by election obey their wealth. Thus, Arif admitted that he was confused about the rules and then replaced them.

"That's why I was surprised, really, yesterday the LHKPN report was not requested at the beginning. Actually, it can be requested at the beginning, before the inauguration," he said.

It didn't stop there, Arif also mentioned a number of current General Election Commission Regulations (PKPU). He said, there are a number of problems that the public should pay attention to, including the LHKPN issue.

"I am afraid that if this is not fulfilled, it will not be achieved, it will not be an obligation that must be fulfilled, it will be an old event that happened again. The achievement will not be 100 percent," he concluded.
