JAKARTA - Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said on Thursday he approved a deal with the United States to end the Middle East war despite having "different views," without giving further explanation.

"In principle, I have a different view (of the memorandum of understanding), but I gave my permission because of the commitment given by the honorable President (of Iran), as chairman of the Supreme National Security Council, on behalf of himself and other members to protect the rights of the Iranian nation and the Resistance Front," said Mojtaba Khamenei in a message read on state television, reported Al Arabiya from AFP (19/6).

Khamenei has not been seen in public since taking office in March, after his father, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in an Israeli-US attack that triggered a regional escalation on February 28.

The message was his first reaction to the Iran-US deal to end the conflict signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Khamenei said President Trump had "used all sorts of means" to secure the deal "out of desperation."

In his message, Khamenei noted that he received assurances from Pezeshkian about the deal and that the deal would not be accepted "if the Americans want to make excessive demands."

"It is clear that face-to-face negotiations to be held in the future will not mean accepting the enemy's point of view," he added.
