JAKARTA - The Zambian authorities confiscated a private plane carrying money amounting to Rp. 87,278,400,000, 602 pieces suspected of being gold, as well as five pistol-type firearms with 136 rounds of ammunition.
Ten people, including one Zambian citizen, six Egyptian nationals and a Dutch citizen, have been detained.
"The plane is from Cairo, Egypt and is heading to Zambia... it should have flown back to Egypt. This is what we have now," said Nason Banda, Director General of Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) Nason Banda, at a press conference in the capital Lusaka. August 16.
Investigators said those detained came to Zambia to make some transactions, according to Banda.
"Drug Enforcement Commission's received information that a chartered plane carrying dangerous goods landed at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on August 13 at 19.00 p.m.," the DEC said in a statement.
"Acting based on this information, we, together with officers from various law enforcement agencies, carried out an operation that resulted in the confiscation of five pistols, seven magazines, 126 rounds of ammunition, 602 pieces suspected of being gold weighing 127.2 kg and equipment to measure gold," explained the body.
Meanwhile, Mineral Mining and Development Minister Paul Kabuswe said the "suspected" gold was being assessed because some of it had been covered, or covered with gold.

Banda said the money was now in a "safe place in the Bank of Zambia" and investigations were continuing.
Authorities also confiscated planes, the Global Express T7-WW, where the items were found, as well as other aircraft belonging to the Zambia airline.
