JAKARTA - Residents of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates will soon be able to board two electric buses, along with the efforts of these emirates to continue developing more sustainable transportation options.
The new vehicle was launched by the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), along with 10 new electric taxis.
The latest addition to the emirate fleet is the next step in offering more environmentally friendly options for passengers, a project that also includes the introduction of more than 750 electric vehicles.
The Tesla Model S and Model 3 electric vehicle fleet will also be launched in Sharjah soon.
"The public transportation network in this emirate serves every housing community, government offices and business districts, providing a comfortable, reliable and secure experience without causing environmental damage or pollution," the RTA said in a statement.
The authority said the transition to environmentally friendly transportation solutions had been carried out in stages and decisively, reflecting the emirate's commitment to environmental sustainability.
"Development of sustainable transportation infrastructure and dependence on clean energy is in line with the UAE's transition to a green economy," explained RTA.
The RTA plans to increase the rate of taxi conversion to hybrids, which ultimately aims to reach 100 percent, up from last year's 65 percent target.
This month, RTA emirat announced it was testing a three-month Chinese-made Skywell electric vehicle for its limousine service.
