The Opsnal Team of the Directorate of Drug Investigation of the North Sulawesi Police (Sulut) arrested a man with the initials JM, suspected of possessing 67.94 grams of methamphetamine in a package sent from Jakarta.
"The man with the initials JM (22) was arrested in Teling Atas Manado Village," said Head of Public Relations of the North Sulawesi Police, Kombes Iis Kristian, while giving a press statement in Manado, Antara, Friday, July 21.
It is suspected that the methamphetamine was sent by someone from outside Manado City, namely from Jakarta and will be circulated in Manado.
"Getting information on the distribution of methamphetamine, the team immediately conducted an investigation and secured two witnesses, namely the man with the initials G and the woman with the initials C who had just received a package of shipments suspected of containing methamphetamine," he said, accompanied by the North Sulawesi Police's Narcotics Director, Kombes Budi Samekto.
After the interrogation, the two witnesses admitted that they were only ordered by JM to take the package.
"The team immediately conducted a search and then arrested the man JM in Kelurahan Teling Atas. After the package was opened, it was true that the package contained methamphetamine and was admitted that it did have it," he said.
The team also conducted a search at JM's house and found several other pieces of evidence in the form of three clear plastic clips suspected of containing methamphetamine.
With the disclosure of the 67.94 gram methamphetamine case, he said, the Police could save hundreds of people from narcotics victims. "Approximately 400 residents who have the potential to become victims of narcotics abuse can be saved," he said.
Meanwhile, the Director of Narcotics, Kombes Budi Samekto, said that the suspect was subject to Article 114 of Law No. 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics.
"The suspect is threatened with imprisonment for life or imprisonment for a minimum of five years and a maximum of 20 years and a fine of at least Rp. 1,000,000,000.00 (one billion rupiah) and a maximum of Rp. 10,000,000,000.00 (ten billion rupiah)," he said.
He also expressed his appreciation to the public who provided information regarding the circulation of narcotics in the jurisdiction of the North Sulawesi Police.
"Don't be afraid to provide information regarding illicit drug trafficking. We expect community participation in eradicating drug trafficking and abuse," he said.
