BENGKULU - Bengkulu Mayor Helmi Hasan submitted a letter of resignation as Mayor for the 2018-2023 period to the Bengkulu City Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD).

The resignation was due to Helmi Hasan running for a candidate for the House of Representatives (DPR) in the 2024 general election (Pemilu).

"We have received the resignation letter (DPRD Bengkulu City) and it will be followed up immediately in accordance with existing regulations," said Bengkulu City DPRD Chairman Suprianto as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, July 12.

Suprianto explained that Helmi Hasan would remain the Mayor of Bengkulu until the announcement from the party's branch leadership council (DPC) which was carried out after the end of the term of office of the Mayor of Bengkulu and Deputy Mayor of Bengkulu in September 2023.

Previously, members of the Bengkulu City DPRD said that the term of office of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Bengkulu would end on September 24, 2023.

The dismissal of the term of office is in accordance with Law Number 23 of 2014 concerning Regional Government which states that the dismissal of regional heads and deputy regional heads was announced by the DPRD leadership in a plenary meeting.

The Bengkulu City DPRD will propose three candidates for acting Mayor during the General Election (Pemilu) and Regional Head Election (Pilkada) process to the Mayor of Bengkulu in 2024.

However, currently, we are still waiting for a letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) asking for three names of the proposed mayor.

If the recommendation letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs is received, it will conduct a discussion at the Bengkulu City DPRD.
