JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) admits that it cannot prevent the transmission of the COVID-19 virus in detention centers (Rutan) even though it has implemented strict health protocols.

The emergence of active cases in detention is thought to have originated from detainees who had permission to leave for medical treatment.

"The KPK must continue to fulfill the rights of detainees requesting permission to seek treatment outside the detention center," said Acting Head of Rutan KPK Ristanta in a written statement, Tuesday, January 26.

Although the anti-graft commission has tightened health protocols and limited physical visits to prevent transmission, COVID-19 can still spread inside the KPK detention center.

Furthermore, Ristanta said that currently there are 14 detainees at the KPK detention center who have been exposed to COVID-19. All of these detainees are currently undergoing treatment at the Wisma Athlete Emergency Hospital under guard.

"The 30th floor there, is devoted to KPK detainees guarded by two prison guard personnel," he explained.

With the entry of COVID-19 into the KPK detention center, Ristanta said his agency would continue to strictly implement health protocols during the pandemic.

The KPK hopes that all stakeholders associated with detention centers comply with health protocols.

"All of this we do not to obstruct the interests of the prisoners and their relatives but for the sake of common health and safety," he concluded.
