JAKARTA - A restaurant in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been closed by authorities for violating food security regulations and could pose health risks.

The roadmeat restaurant on Jalan Latifa, Al Ain closed on Tuesday, after the restaurant violated health and security regulations, Abu Dhabi's Agricultural and Food Safety Authority said in a statement.

The restaurant has been given several warnings for being unhygienic, storing food in a place that is not clean, before being closed by health workers.

An insect was found in a food storage area that could pose a risk to consumer health, the statement said.

"This administrative closure is the result of repeated high-risk violations," said Abu Dhabi's Agricultural and Food Safety Authority, as reported by The National News May 30.

"Supervisors found insects in the preparation area for meat and vegetables, as well as in the area where clean equipment is stored," the statement continued.

Health officials said three warning letters had been issued to the restaurant, due to poor levels of cleanliness in the preparation area and food storage.

"The restaurant did not respond to inspectors' concerns regarding food safety requirements. Repair measures were not carried out by the restaurant," the statement continued.

It said the restaurant would remain closed until the violation was fixed.

Meanwhile, the restaurant told The National the fine had been paid and they were waiting for the inspectors to visit and revoke the closure.

"We committed violations due to cleanliness and food safety," said Mohammed Sajad, a worker speaking in English on behalf of the supervisor.

"We are trying to improve the situation and have cleaned the restaurant. We are waiting for the inspector to visit today or tomorrow to give approval to reopen the restaurant," he explained.

"This restaurant has been operating since 2020 and we promised supervisors to change the situation so that it remains open," said Sajad.
