Megawati Says 2023 To 2036 Momentum Makes Indonesia A Developed Country

JAKARTA - The 5th President of the Republic of Indonesia Megawati Soekarnoputri said that from 2023 to 2036 it would be a peak time for demographic changes to make Indonesia from a developing country into a developed country.

"We are a demographic, which is good to be able to raise, from being called a developed country to a developed country. That's a demographic in 2023, then in the next 13 years it's peak time. After that it recedes," Megawati said when delivering a presentation at a seminar entitled "The Future Balinese Development Policy, 100 Years Bali New Era" in Badung, Bali, Friday.

The calculation is the result of talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and economists. "That the world is now experiencing demographic changes," said Megawati.

He added that this demographic change was also experienced by Indonesia and Indonesia's peak time to reach the point of change from developing to developed countries lasted for 13 years, from 2023 to 2036.

Therefore, in order to take advantage of the momentum of demographic changes, Megawati encourages all levels of government to be able to create a productive society.

When the peak moment passes, Megawati continued, the next phase is an inverse pyramid phenomenon, as is currently being experienced by Japan, South Korea, and China.

What is meant by the reverse pyramid is the number of elderly people or the elderly exceeding the number of people of productive age.

"So, it must be encouraged, how can they be productive. So we can be lifted to become the 4th developed country. (The first) China, India, America, us," he said.

Megawati revealed that this topic became the talk of the general chairmen of political parties who had a relationship with President Joko Widodo a few days ago.

"Well, yesterday, when the chairmans collected the news, what politics was discussed? Nothing. Gathering, eating, that's it, just saying this (demographic change)," said Megawati.
