A total of 1,466 Hindu prisoners spread across Indonesia receive Special Remission (RK) for Nyepi Day 2023.

The Coordinator of Public Relations and Protocol of the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) Rika Aprianti in a written statement received in Jakarta, Wednesday, March 22, stated that 1,463 inmates received RK I or a partial reduction in their criminal period, where after receiving remission, they still had to carry out the remaining criminal charges in prisons and state detention centers (rutan).

"Three other people received RK II or were immediately released after receiving remission," said Rika, quoting Antara, Wednesday, March 22.

He explained that a total of 2,062 Hindu prisoners were spread throughout Indonesia. Ditjenpas approved remission for 1,466 people in 2023.

The area with the most remission recipients, namely Bali with 1,018, followed by Central Kalimantan with 82 people, West Nusa Tenggara 69 people, North Sumatra 64 people, and South Sulawesi 43 people.

Rika explained that this special remission is the right of the inmates as regulated in Article 10 of Law Number 22 of 2022 concerning Corrections.

The granting of remissions is further regulated through the Regulation of the Minister of Law and Human Rights (Permenkumham) Number 7 of 2022 concerning the Second Amendment to the Minister of Law and Human Rights Number 3 of 2018 concerning Terms and Procedures for Providing Remission, Assimilation, Leave to Visit Family, Conditional Release, Leave Ahead of Free, and Conditional Leave.

"All inmates who received remissions have met the substantive and administrative requirements in accordance with applicable regulations," said Rika.

He said that granting remissions is a form of state appreciation for prisoners who have shown behavior change and participated in various coaching activities in prisons and detention centers properly.

In addition, the inmates who received remission had passed the coaching assessment through the Prisoners Development Assessment System (SPPN).

"Hopefully this remission can increase the motivation of prisoners to continue to try to become better human beings as a provision for themselves until the time comes back to society," he said.

Rika added that giving this remission could save the inmates' food costs of up to Rp705,840,000.

Not only that, he said, the granting of remission is considered to be able to slightly unravel the condition of the excess population that occurs in most prisons and detention centers.

He said the data as of March 16, 2023 showed that there were 265,405 prisoners throughout Indonesia, of which 220,842 were prisoners and 44,563 were prisoners.
