United States President Joe Biden condemned the "attack on democracy" in Brazil after supporters of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro stormed Congress, the presidential palace and the country's Supreme Court on Sunday.

President Biden said he hoped to continue working with left-wing President Luiz Inacio CLA da Silva, who defeated Bolsonaro in the fiercest election of a generation last year.

"I condemn attacks on democracy and the peaceful transfer of power in Brazil. Brazil's democratic institutions have our full support and the wishes of the Brazilian people should not be undermined," Biden said on Twitter.

Earlier on the same day, President Biden said the situation in Brazil was "outrageous".

The raid caused a memory of the invasion of Capitol Hill, Washington DC, by supporters of former President Donald Trump, disrupting Joe Biden's victory certification in general elections.

"We condemn attacks on the Presidential, Congress, and the Brazilian Supreme Court," US Secretary of State Antony Blinken wrote on Twitter.

"Using violence to attack democratic institutions is always unacceptable. We join Lula to urge an immediate end to this action," he continued.

The sight of thousands of protesters dressed in yellow and green riots in the capital ended months of tension after the October 30 vote in Brazil. Bolsonaro, a Trump supporter who has yet to admit defeat, has peddled false claims that Brazil's electronic voting system is vulnerable to fraud, which gave birth to violent movements from election deniers.

"I condemn the outrageous attacks on #Brazil government buildings triggered by Bolsonaro's reckless demagog ignoring democratic principles," US Senator Bob Menendez, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said on Twitter.

"2 years since January 6, Trump's legacy has continued to poison our hemisphere. Protecting democracy & holding bad actors accountable is essential."

It is known that Bolsonaro flew to Florida, United States 48 hours before his mandate ended and was absent from the inauguration of Kla.

As previously reported, thousands of protesters supporting former Brazil's far-right President Jair Bolsonaro stormed Congress, the presidential palace and the country's Supreme Court on Sunday.

President Luiz Inacio CLA da Silva later announced federal security interventions in Brasilia which lasted until January 31.

"These thugs, who we can call fanatical Nazis, fanatical Stalinists... fanatical fascists, do what has never been done in the history of this country," said President Lula, who is on his official trip to the State of Sao Paulo.

"Everyone who does this will be found and they will be punished," he stressed.
