Cianjur Earthquake Update from BNPB: 14 People Died, 17 Injured

JAKARTA - Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Suharyanto, said 14 people died as a result of the earthquake that occurred in Cianjur, West Java, this afternoon. This data is provisional.

"The death toll in Cianjur is 14 people who have died. Information will continue to develop that data collection is related to victims", ​​said Suharyanto, quoted via BMKG's INFO Youtube, Monday evening.

The victims died in Cilaku Subdistrict, Rancagoong Village and Limbangansari, Cugenang District. In addition to the death toll, BNPB also recorded 17 injured people. Several buildings and public facilities were also damaged.

According to the data, 7 housing units were heavily damaged, 1 Islamic boarding school was heavily damaged and 1 Cianjur Hospital was slightly damaged.

"3 government buildings were damaged, 3 educational facilities were damaged, 1 worship facility was damaged and one shop unit was damaged", he added.

The earthquake occurred at 13.21 WIB at the coordinates of 6.84 South Latitude, 107.05 East Longitude, southwest of Cianjur Regency, West Java. The earthquake was also felt in the Greater Bandung, Sukabumi, Garut, Jakarta, and Tangerang areas. However, the earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami because the earthquake occurred on land.

BNPB appealed to local governments and citizens to increase their vigilance and preparedness in the face of earthquake hazards.
