JAKARTA - Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claims only nuclear weapons can keep the world from a global war.

"The current (world security) situation can be said to be quite eroded, even in many ways. Apart from nuclear deterrence, there is nothing else we have in this world. This is the only thing that protects the world from a global war," Peskov said at the Primakov Readings forum, reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Wednesday, June 24.

The overall potential for regional conflict, according to him, continues to increase. Peskov stated that currently there is no means or mechanism in the world to conduct negotiations on security issues.

"Once again, technology is developing in such a way that it is clear that new types of weapons, which are not nuclear, but in the future are capable of matching the destructive power of nuclear weapons, will emerge," Peskov said.

The spokesperson noted that the world's nuclear deterrence mechanism is still functioning and the Russian government is aware of it.
