Responds To The Statement Of Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Hidayat Nur Wahid: PBB Could Not Be A Mandul Organization

JAKARTA - Deputy Chairperson of the MPR Hidayat Nur Wahid reminded the United Nations (UN) to consistently carry out its functions. One of them is maintaining world peace. "PBB must consistently carry out its functions according to their background and because of their establishment, one of which is maintaining world peace and security," said Hidayat Nur Wahid in a statement received in Jakarta, Antara, Wednesday, September 21. He reminded the United Nations not to be a barren organization and only as a commentator. Hidayat said this in response to comments by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stating that the world is in danger. "PBB should not only be a commentator, look barren, and ineffective. Precisely in conditions that are feared by the Secretary General, the United Nations should be able to carry out its role and be challenged to carry out its obligations and objectives," he said. The United Nations, he continued, should not become passive and increase the potential for world problems because it does not practice social justice, economic justice, and political justice. "Therefore, the United Nations should focus on implementing decisions, including the resolutions they have produced," he added. He gave an example of many resolutions related to Palestine and Israel produced by the UN Security Council (DK). However, that resolution is often violated at the level of implementation and the United Nations has not taken action to enforce the institution's rise in saving the world. "This is a consistent test for the United Nations to carry out its function of maintaining world security. Due to the neglect of the UN DK resolution of Israel, it is a clear proof whether the United Nations can carry out its duties consistently or not. It is also the UN's seriousness to save the world from harm," he explained. Meanwhile, at the UN General Assembly Summit in New York, United States, Tuesday (20/9), Antonio Guterres explained a number of issues that threaten the world. These issues include conflicts and climate disasters, increasing poverty and inequality, as well as the division between the world's great powers that have deteriorated since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Not to mention, issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic excesses have troubled various countries in the world. In addition to consistently carrying out its functions, said Hidayat, the United Nations needs to carry out institutional reforms so that they are truly democratic and involve many parties in every decision-making, thus contributing positively to saving the world from various harms. One of the urgent things to do by the United Nations is reform related to permanent membership of the UN DK and veto rights granted to a handful of permanent member states of the UN DK. "The veto rights owned by a handful of countries are not in line with the democratic values used by the world's countries today," he said. This is not in accordance with global developments, both political, economic, and technology. Therefore, Hidayat assessed that serious efforts were needed to reform the situation. "So that member states feel they have a proportional representation, bringing a new spirit to become UN members to be responsible for saving the world from various dangers that threaten its existence and its future," he said. According to him, the use of PBB's veto rights is also not in accordance with the latest and future global developments, with the emergence of the spirit of globalization that relies on equality and the emergence of new challenges and powers in the world. "These things should be the main consideration for reforming the institutional and UN authority so that the call for the UN Secretary General to get a positive answer, saving the world from various harms," said Hidayat Nur Wahid.
