PDIP To Anies Baswedan: Jakarta Needs Action To Overcome Pollution Not With Words

JAKARTA - DKI Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) member, Gilbert Simanjuntak, emphasized that Jakarta needed action, not a series of words from Governor Anies Baswedan to respond to the worsening condition of Jakarta's air pollution in the last two weeks.

"There is no need to organize words to explain the causes and other things. What is needed is action. Jakarta needs leaders, not officials", Gilbert said in Jakarta, Monday, June 20, in his statement quoted from Antara.

This, the PDI-P politician said, was because Anies did not pay attention to air quality, as evidenced by the fact that since Jakarta has often entered the city with the worst air pollution in the world, it has not given any response.

According to him, Anies is more focused on other things, namely the presidential candidate (Capres) 2024, rather than thinking about the air quality of the capital city, which in the past two weeks has become the city with the highest air pollution in the world.

"The presidential election is still on February 14, 2024, and Anies is still in office until October 16, 2022. However, when Jakarta's air is experiencing the heaviest pollution in the world, Anies' focus seems to be more on the presidential election", said Gilbert.

Anies' focus on the presidential candidate, he said, can be seen from the planned inauguration of the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) on June 26.

He also regrets that Anies even responded after being included in one of the three names recommended by the presidential candidate for the NasDem party.

"Everything from the inauguration of JIS and various other activities to Nasdem bringing up the name of the presidential candidate was given his opinion", he said.

Various programs such as public education, reducing private motorized vehicles, using masks, and others are also considered not working.

"Obviously, this toxic pollution reduces life expectancy by 4 years and is more dangerous than AIDS and other diseases. Is this a form of indifference because they want to press?" he said.

According to Gilbert, this very dangerous air pollution must be overcome so that the entire population of DKI is not affected.

According to him, data on the increase in cases of respiratory disorders should have been detected because it has been going on for more than two weeks, so what must be done by the ranks of the DKI Provincial Government, including education to the community, must be conveyed.

"People need to be aware of reducing private vehicles and using masks outside their homes. The odd-even policy which is extended to 26 lanes should be evaluated because even though it is stated to reduce congestion, in fact, pollution is increasing. This must be done quickly", he said.
