Ma'ruf Amin: Since The COVID-19 Pandemic, Many MUI Fatwas Have Become The Reference

JAKARTA - The Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ma'ruf Amin, emphasized that the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has played a long role in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, by issuing various fatwas as references.

"MUI has played a role for a long time. Since the pandemic, MUI fatwas have become a reference," said the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia Ma'ruf Amin during a virtual chat with government spokesperson Reisa Broto Asmoro in Jakarta, Friday, reported by Antara, October 16.

Ma'ruf, who is also the head of the central MUI, gave an example of a number of MUI fatwas during the pandemic. For example, in the Friday prayers, Eid al-Fitr prayers, Eid al-Adha prayers, zakat payments, procedures for worshiping medical personnel, reviewing the corpse, and so on.

Meanwhile, regarding vaccination, the Vice President said that MUI should also be involved starting from planning, procurement, consideration and audits in factories.

Therefore, Ma'ruf said, currently MUI is visiting the People's Republic of China to see the process of preparing vaccine candidates.

MUI, he said, would later also be involved in determining the halal vaccine.

"Regarding halal issues, there must be a certificate from an authorized institution, in this case the MUI. But, suppose at one time, such as during meningitis, there is no (vaccine / drug) that is lawful, but if the vaccine does not use it will cause harm, then it can be used ( vaccines / drugs) even though they are not halal. They are used in an emergency by an authorized institution, "he said.
