PPP Proposes Anies-Khofifah Duet, Observer: History In Indonesia Is Difficult To Win If Supported By Only One Group

JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan is recommended to partner with East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

In response to the planned duet, political communication observer from Esa Unggul University Jamiluddin Ritonga, assessed that Khofifah's chances of pairing with Anies Baswedan in the 2024 presidential election were relatively small.

According to him, there are several reasons for the lack of opportunities for Anies-Khofifah. First, Anies and Khofifah both received support from Islamic groups.

"History in Indonesia, it is difficult for a presidential candidate to win only by an Islamic group or a nationalist group," said Jamiluddin in Jakarta, Monday, April 18.

"So the chances of Khofifah pairing with Anies to win are relatively small. Support from nationalist groups will be very small if the Anies-Khofifah pair runs in the 2024 presidential election," he continued.

Second, there are relatively few political parties that will carry the Anies-Khofifah pair. So far, said Jamiluddin, only PPP has shown an interest in carrying the pair.

"Other Islamic parties seem less interested in carrying the Anies-Khofifah pair. The same thing can be seen from parties that are nationalist and religious nationalists," he said.

Third, Khofifah's electability is not enough to boost her pairing with Anies. According to him, Anies does not look confident in pairing with Khofifah in the 2024 presidential election.

However, said Jamiluddin, if Khofifah was paired with Anies, it was likely that she would get support from women's groups. It's just that the support won't be great either.

Because, according to him, women who are aware of gender equality are still limited to educated women. Moreover, there are not many educated women in Indonesia.

"So, it seems that the Anies-Khofifah pair will find it difficult to get a supporting party. The chances of winning are indeed small," he concluded.

Previously, the DKI Jakarta PPP Regional Leadership Council (DPW) and East Java PPP DPW proposed to nominate DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan and East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa in the 2024 presidential election.
