JAKARTA - The PKB faction of the DPR has not yet determined its position regarding the approval of the ratification of the extradition treaty between Indonesia and Singapore. A member of the DPR from the PKB faction, Jazilul Fawaid, said his party was still studying the agreement by considering the pros and cons for Indonesia.

However, PKB reminded that the approval for the ratification of extradition was not given before receiving a positive response from the public.

"The PKB is still investigating first. Of course, the pluses and minuses for Indonesia's sovereignty must be carefully considered," Jazilul told reporters, Thursday, February 3.

Jazilul admitted that he had not received information that the DPR would specifically discuss the extradition treaty. However, the Deputy Chairperson of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) appealed to the government and the DPR not to rush into making decisions.

"In our opinion, there is no need to rush a decision before getting a positive response from the public and stakeholders," said Jazilul.

Previously, the government stated that the extradition treaty with Singapore would narrow the space for criminals in Indonesia to escape. Moreover, Indonesia already has agreements with partner countries in the region, including Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Australia, the Republic of Korea, the People's Republic of China, and Hong Kong.

"This extradition agreement will create a deterrence effect for criminals in Indonesia and Singapore," said Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly on Wednesday last week.

Yasona signs the Indonesia-Singapore Extradition Agreement, in Bintan, Riau Islands, Tuesday, January 25, 2022.
