JAKARTA - The police are currently investigating the alleged illegal recording of foreign female employees by factory owners, when a mysterious fire destroys a lot of evidence.

An investigation was conducted against the owner of a factory in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, for allegedly illegally filming a female worker of foreign nationality there.

The man, who has not been identified, is accused of filming the victim while taking a shower, through a two-way mirror he had previously installed in the women's bathroom at work, Pocheon police said Wednesday.

The female worker, who was later identified as being from the Philippines, made a police report on Monday after she saw a suspicious flash in the mirror.

Through initial investigations, police found the mirror to be bidirectional, appearing reflective on one side and transparent on the other, allowing a person from one side to see the other but not the other way around.

Police suspect that the factory owner recorded the victim who was taking a shower at the time using his cell phone.

Coincidentally or not, less than a day after the victim made a police report, a fire broke out at the factory where she worked on Tuesday at 3:40 am, 14 hours after the police started their investigation.

The fire was extinguished after firefighters struggled for five hours. However, two factory buildings, including bathrooms, were burned to the ground destroying much of the evidence.

Police are conducting a forensic investigation of the factory owner's phone, as well as additional investigations into the scene to find the exact cause of the fire. Meanwhile, the factory owner claims the fire may have been started by one of his employees.

"It could be revenge against me by the female colleague," he told local broadcaster SBS, citing the Korea Times December 29.

Separately, Kim Dal-sung, head of the Migrant Workers Support Center in Pocheon, said authorities should investigate the fire and spycam crimes thoroughly.

"The factory owner seems to be blaming workers for the arson to cover up the illegal spycam case. The police should investigate immediately to see if there are any additional charges against him," he hoped.
